Steve Hyde

Directors and Producers often commend me for my meticulous preparation and composure amidst the high stakes of production. This might stem from the discipline I honed over many years growing up in Colorado. In the mountains, where a lapse in preparation or judgment can be life-threatening, I developed an instinct for thorough planning, always anticipating challenges before they arise. These habits have seamlessly transitioned into my cinematography work, where patience, foresight, and adaptability are the cornerstones of my approach.

The calm I maintain under pressure is a trait I learned in the 1990s as an aviator training at Boeing Field in Seattle. In flying, where equipment failures are anticipated, there's a clear parallel to the unpredictability of a film set. I address equipment challenges with the same level of precision and resolve, ensuring that production recovers swiftly when conditions change.

Beyond the logistics of camera department management, my drive as a filmmaker is fueled by a profound love for books, movies, and music. I've come to view cinematography as a significant new language, one that requires learning and practice. I believe in the potential of international films to open windows onto the human condition and to serve as instruments for peace.

As a Director of Photography, I am a fervent advocate of the Motivated Picture—where framing focuses our eyes on something significant, where every angle is intentional and where camera movements motivate our attention, directing the viewer's emotions to the core of an idea.
