"PBS American Masters: Lily Gladstone – Far Out There"
In the world of documentary filmmaking, rare are the opportunities that let us delve deeply into the metamorphosis of an artist. 'Far Out There' wasn't just another biography—it was an intimate journey with Lily Gladstone, chronicling her pivotal moments leading up to the release of 'Killers of the Flower Moon.'
My role as one of the Directors of Photography, in collaboration with Producer Jeri Rafter and Director Brooke Pepion Swaney, was a dance of shadow and light across the stages of preparation and celebration. We set our stage in two contrasting worlds—the hallowed quiet of a theater stage and the buzz of activity at my own production facility. I orchestrated a team of camera assistants, and together we painted Lily's story with the rich textures and sweeping ranges of the Angenieux 24-290 zoom lens coupled with the versatility of the ARRI Alexa Mini. Our vision was to present Lily authentically, respecting her narrative while framing her emergence in the limelight.
One particular challenge was capturing the vibrancy and fervor of a red carpet event. To create the illusion of swarming paparazzi, we cleverly utilized an ARRI S-60 skypanel to mimic the relentless flashbulbs—a testament to our team's ingenuity in recreating the electric atmosphere of a premiere. It's in these moments, when technical innovation meets creative storytelling, that we truly honor the subject of our lens and the legacy of 'American Masters.'
